Hong Kong Stocks Surge Over 2% on Heavy Volume, Tech Heavyweights Lead

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index opened higher and maintained strong momentum throughout the day, closing up more than 2%—the largest single-day gain in over a month. Market turnover expanded significantly, up about 30% from the previous session, signaling stronger capital inflows. The Hang Seng Tech Index outperformed with a nearly 4% jump, led by heavyweight stocks such as Tencent Holdings and Alibaba, which were the primary drivers of the index's advance.

Three-Fold Logic Behind the Market Sentiment Recovery

This rebound is not an isolated event but the result of multiple converging factors. First, overnight US stocks stabilized, with the Nasdaq closing higher, providing external support for Hong Kong's tech sector. Second, Beijing's policy signals have turned positive, with expectations for normalized regulation of the platform economy stabilizing, easing concerns that had previously weighed on tech valuations. Third, southbound capital has recorded net inflows for several consecutive days, with today's net buying hitting a recent high, indicating renewed confidence among mainland investors in Hong Kong equities.

Heavyweight Performance: Tencent and Alibaba Lead

Tencent Holdings rose over 4% today, with the highest turnover in Hong Kong. Market sources indicate that game license approvals are accelerating, and its cloud services business is growing steadily, prompting several institutions to raise their target prices. Alibaba gained nearly 5%, as investors are optimistic about efficiency improvements following its organizational restructuring, and its international retail business is growing strongly. Additionally, other tech stocks such as Meituan and JD.com also recorded gains of over 3%, creating a broad-based rally across the sector.

Capital Flows and Volume Analysis

Today's market turnover reached approximately HK$180 billion, up about 30% from yesterday and the highest level since April. In terms of capital flows, southbound net buying reached around HK$8 billion, with major additions in the tech and financial sectors. Meanwhile, overseas funds are also showing signs of returning, and the short-selling ratio of Stock Connect targets has declined, indicating increased short covering pressure. This pattern of rising prices alongside expanding volume is typically seen as a confirmation of improving market confidence.

Outlook: Can the Rally Sustain?

Despite today's strong rebound, uncertainties remain. On one hand, the Fed's rate hike cycle has not clearly ended, and the global liquidity environment remains tight. On the other hand, geopolitical risks and the progress of Sino-US audit oversight cooperation still need to be monitored. However, from a valuation perspective, the Hang Seng Index's current price-to-earnings ratio remains at historical lows, and earnings expectations for the tech sector have been revised upward, highlighting medium- to long-term allocation value. In the short term, if trading volume stays elevated and heavyweight stocks continue to strengthen, the rally could extend; otherwise, the market may enter a phase of consolidation.
