In recent days, international financial markets have once again staged a classic "seesaw" move: gold quickly retreated after hitting an all-time high, while U.S. Treasuries attracted safe-haven inflows, with yields falling in tandem. Behind this asset rotation lies institutional investors' repeated weighing of inflation expectations, monetary policy paths, and geopolitical risks. In the derivatives market, shifts in option-implied volatility and futures positioning are revealing the subtle migration of capital from "hard assets" to "sovereign credit."

Gold's "Sudden Brake" After Record High

Since 2024, gold prices have climbed steadily on multiple tailwinds, briefly breaking through previous historical highs and sparking discussions of a "gold supercycle." However, shortly after hitting new peaks, gold prices experienced a notable pullback, with weekly losses at one point exceeding the cumulative gains of the prior several weeks. According to the World Gold Council, global gold ETFs saw consecutive net inflows during the price surge, but during the correction phase, some short-term speculative positions quickly exited, and open interest in futures markets also declined.

Analysts point out that the core drivers of gold's rally were heightened expectations of Fed rate cuts and a premium for geopolitical uncertainty. But once gold reached record levels, technical overbought conditions and profit-taking pressure intensified—especially when U.S. economic data showed signs of resilience, prompting some funds to reassess the opportunity cost of holding gold.

Treasuries' "Safe-Haven" Return

In stark contrast to gold's correction, the U.S. Treasury market saw a wave of buying during the same period. The 10-year Treasury yield fell significantly after gold peaked, with prices rising, indicating a flow of funds from gold into sovereign bonds. Based on Federal Reserve statements and U.S. Treasury auction data, bid-to-cover ratios for long-term bonds have risen recently, with strong demand from both overseas official institutions and private investors.

This switch is not coincidental. On one hand, Treasuries, as the world's most liquid safe-haven asset, often provide more stable cash flow expectations during risk events. On the other hand, if the Fed indeed enters a rate-cutting cycle, bond prices will directly benefit, while gold, despite being an inflation hedge, tends to face headwinds during periods of rising real interest rates. In the derivatives market, interest rate futures show that market expectations for the number of rate cuts this year have been revised upward after gold's pullback, further strengthening the appeal of Treasuries.

Institutional Allocation Logic: From "Confrontation" to "Hedging"

In institutional investors' asset allocation frameworks, gold and Treasuries are not simple substitutes but rather hedging tools for different risk scenarios. Gold is typically used to hedge extreme risks such as runaway inflation, currency devaluation, or geopolitical conflict, while Treasuries are more often used to hedge deflation, liquidity crises, or economic recession. In the current environment, strengthening expectations of a "soft landing" make the risk-reward profile of Treasuries relatively more attractive.

According to strategy reports from several investment banks, some large pension funds and sovereign wealth funds have recently adjusted their portfolios, trimming gold allocations from overweight to neutral while increasing holdings of short- and medium-term Treasuries. This adjustment does not reflect a bearish view on gold's long-term value but rather a rebalancing based on short-term valuations and the rate path. In the derivatives market, the put/call ratio for gold options rose during the correction, while net long positions in Treasury futures increased, confirming the shift in institutional hedging behavior.

Signals from the Derivatives Market

From a derivatives perspective, the seesaw effect between gold and Treasuries is particularly evident in options pricing. Gold's implied volatility spiked after the record high and then fell, while the volatility surface for Treasury options flattened, indicating more moderate pricing of interest rate risk. Additionally, the term structure of gold futures shifted from deep backwardation to slight contango after the correction, suggesting easing physical tightness; meanwhile, basis trading activity in Treasury futures increased, reflecting hedge funds leveraging to capture the decline in yields.

Notably, Bitcoin, after breaking $100,000 in 2024, was also seen by some funds as "digital gold," but its high volatility makes it difficult to truly replace Treasuries as a safe haven. According to CoinGecko data, Bitcoin's correlation with gold has declined recently, while its correlation with the Nasdaq has strengthened, further prompting institutions to prioritize Treasuries in their safe-haven portfolios.

Outlook: Seesaw Likely to Continue, but Slope May Moderate

Looking ahead, the seesaw effect between gold and Treasuries is likely to persist, but the slope of volatility may moderate. If U.S. inflation data continues to decline and the Fed delivers rate cuts, Treasuries' appeal will strengthen further, while gold will need new catalysts—such as a significant drop in real rates or an escalation in geopolitical risks—to regain upward momentum. Conversely, if inflation rebounds or fiscal deficit concerns intensify, gold's safe-haven value will come to the fore again.

For derivatives traders, the current phase calls for closer attention to cross-asset correlation changes. Strategies such as buying Treasury call options while selling gold call options, or using gold/Treasury spread options for arbitrage, could be effective in capturing this round of the seesaw. However, in a market still rife with uncertainty, flexibly adjusting hedge ratios and avoiding one-sided bets remain core principles for institutional allocation.
